Math activities for preschoolers

Preschool children do not have to learn difficult subject as mathematic as if they are in first grade. However, basic Math concept can be introduced as they are playing. Preschoolers are very excited about numbers and alphabets. We can start teaching children counting as young as 18 months old. Math activities are not only to help develop mathematical concept, also improve physical, language, social, and cognitive development.

Children should be allowed to explore to have fun with numbers. (For example- eat numbers, sing numbers, dance with numbers, build with numbers, count numbers, match numbers, draw numbers, paint numbers, sort numbers).

Baking with toddler and preschooler ( Recipe included )

Baking is truly a combination of art and science where preschoolers can learn many areas in kindergarten readiness. I bake a lot with my daughter since she was a toddler, now a preschooler. When she was younger, it was just a fun activity of dry pouring, wet pouring, mixing and keeping their hands busy. Now that she is a preschooler, a lot of teaching points can be made during baking. Following are the areas baking can help promote children’s development.

Baking can help boost child’s social emotional development such as persisting with tasks, following direction, information recall and connection and working together with an adult as a team as child is interacting with adult and providing for family. Baking also helps with emotional development as children learn patience, responsibility and feeling confident and accomplished once they figured out how to bake.

Language-offers the opportunity to develop language development by teaching them new words and what actions we take during baking. By communicating with children step by step during baking, and asking questions about what they think will happen when we add certain ingredient, change in color, texture, exploration of taste and expressing of taste.

Mathematical thinking- It is also good for mathematical concepts counting, weighting, measurement, ratios, temperature, and time. Let them count the eggs, cookies, help you with different measurements, and put the right amount of time on the timer. All of the math and numbers involved in cooking and baking can help them get a better understanding of numbers and will give them a head start when they begin learning fractions

Scientific thinking – kitchen is a science lab for children where they can experiment the hypothesis and find out the results. Baking is a good example of chemical process and chemical reaction. For example, children can learn the effect of temperature, certain ingredient on food consistency, taste, texture, etc. Children learn different states of matter form, liquid, solid.

Here is a few simple recipe you can start baking with your preschoolers and teaching points.

Broccoli cheddar bites

Step 1. Finely chop the steamed broccoli florets.

Step 2. Preheat the oven and grease a mini muffin tin with cooking spray.

Step 3.  In a medium bowl, combine the finely chopped broccoli, cheese, eggs, flour, melted butter, and milk. Season lightly with salt and pepper to your preference and stir until well combined.

Step 4. Spoon into muffin tin and bake for 10-15 minutes, until set and golden.

Feel free to add bacon, deli meat if you want meat option.

Banana bread

10 creative art activities for toddlers and preschoolers

“Every child is an artist, problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up ” Picasso once said. All children are born with this innate desire to create or express their feelings in the way of art. Provide a child with paint, brush, and canvas or paper, and any items listed below, and watch magic to happen.

How to set up the activity?

As we are presenting an activity in Montessori inspired way, we will use a tray and all the supplies contained in a tray. Don’t make the same mistake like me, use acrylic tray instead of wood. One thing I have learned homeschooling children in Montessori way is that not everything has to be wooden.

Following are reasons why art is so important in early childhood education.

Art as communication

Because young children have an inborn drive to communicate, they continually work to communicate with their environment. Babies coo, cry, babble, and then they finally speak. Given wide variety of materials and appropriate freedom and time to discover how art materials work, young children can teach themselves the art skills they need in order to express themselves. This communication comes from deep within the children, revealing their uniqueness.

Art as expression

Art has a role in education by helping children become more themselves instead of more like everyone else. The arts can be the medium for this expression if children have access to many materials, the time to explore them, and respectful encouragement of their exploration.

Art as manipulating medium

They are trying out brushes, colors, lines, and strokes to see what happens when they use them. As they gain control their pencil control and mastering on use of the materials and thus help them prepare for writing.

I have listed the art supplies list or must have items in your homeschool environment.

  • Paint
  • Watercolor set
  • Finger paint
  • Fluorescent paint
  • Crayons
  • Easels
  • Chalk
  • Color pencils
  • Glitter paints
  • Marker
  • Dot arts
  • Food color

Art supplies

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Tapes
  • Sponges
  • Stamps
  • Stamp pads
  • Clay
  • Play dough
  • Pom-poms
  • Bubble wrap
  • Construction paper
  • Feathers

Try these creative activities for your kids.

Bubble wrap art
Bring any kitchen items and toys of different shapes to paint table
Toilet paper roll, shape art
Use cardboard as canvas
Box painting is a must try for mess free paint activity
Egg painting, don’t make the same mistake like me, Use table cloth to protect your furnitures.
Nature collection painting,
Nature collection painting, rocks, shells anything you collect out from nature, clean and paint
Tape painting creates the most beautiful canvas to decorate playroom
Tracing art, anything easily traceable items, give them with a marker to see what kind of shape art they create
Face painting. Since my face is not always available for them to paint, give them washable face so that they can create many looks
Nature art. Use anything you see out from nature, flowers, leaves, fruits, vegetables. Let the creativity flows.
The best preschool art projects are the foundation for creative thinking, exploration and problem solving. It is the process not the product.

Blocks Playing and Learning Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Blocks are necessity in learning environment. It is a tool to help children’s development in all areas. Following are a few skills you can build by playing with blocks.

Social Foundation – Information Recall and Connection children learn to work together, build relationship with others. (Threes). Recalls and uses the sequence of events in a past experience to solve a present problem (Fours).
Math concept- children learn language by describing the shapes and colors of the blocks. Child learn math concept by counting blocks and creating pattern with it Sorts and classifies objects into two groups by one attribute. (Threes). Sorts and classifies objects by one attribute, and then further sorts each group by a second attribute. (Fours)
Physical- children learn the physical skills of holding, stacking, balancing, and lining up the blocks. Younger children will manipulate and older ones will master and build with intention. Regardless, give blocks to children of any age and observe how they play with them.

Block Sorting ( sort by shape or sort by color or sort by size)

Children can recognize the difference of materials in their environment typically by 18 months, they will be able to recognize same colors, shapes, size.

Block Counting

You can count as you play or if you want to be more structured, use number of sheets as a guide to stack up blocks. For example1-block tower goes on the 1, a 2-block tower goes on the 2, 3 on 3, and so on.

Shape Matching

Create different patterns with the blocks on a sheet of paper and match each one.

Fill in Block shapes

Give your child either the 5 or 10 blocks you used and ask them if they know how to fit them into the shape.

Block patterns

What color comes after blue? You can ask the children to guess the pattern while measuring the heights of toys by using blocks.

Measuring how tall by using blocks

Now my kid can tell her favorite doll is 3 blocks tall. This will also help with Mathematical skills in the future.

Block painting

Block painting is a combination of Art and Math. Endless possibility to create art by using blocks.

Creative building

since blocks are open-ended. children can play in any possible ways they can think of. Building with blocks promote creativity and imagination.

Teaching grace and courtesy in Burmese Americans Home

As a mom who was raised in cultural enriched environment, it is important for me to teach firsthand my children their cultural origin, also to love themselves for who they are. Raising multiracial children to learn everything about two totally different cultures, traditions and perspectives is not easy but very rewarding at the end. Here is my top 10 general tips to promote pro-social behaviors and understanding of social norms so multiracial children can fit in both worlds

  1. Reading books about social etiquette and norms from different culture together.
  2. Speak your language- One person, one language rule is what we followed most of the time. Being bilingual is an amazing opportunity to give your children when you speak second language. Even if they don’t speak it well, passing down your culture can often go hand in hand with language. Basic greetings are sometimes all a child needs to fit in and feel part of the group. It is also a favor that you can give to the grandparents who are not English speakers. They want to be able to communicate with their family members without limitation.
  3. Pass on your traditions – It is important for me and my husband to pass down our own culture. We don’t need to do everything that our parents did but important highlights and discussions that help children understand why they are celebrating particular days and things. In our family, we have chosen to continue the traditional of paying respect to elderly in thindingyut, going to temple in certain religious and cultural festivals and to celebrate Christmas. We have made these choices consciously and with intention about what we wish our mixed race kids to take.
  4. Just observe- especially when we bring children to temple, when children are in the environment they are not familiar, observe the children and do not disturb or jump in too quickly, allow them to explore and ask questions.
  5. Explaining limitations and expectations ahead of time so that kids do not feel like a unfair treatment when they violate the expectation when they are in different environment such as temple, church, grandparents’ houses.
  6. Listen and understand their feelings and emotions-as they are adapting two different world and learning different perspectives of social norms, it is important to listen to and give act of kindness and appreciation when they express their feelings, and preferences.
  7. Being a role model of all appropriate social behavior. Kids learn from observing the grown ups as they are absorbing everything around them. When you foster a good relationship with the grandparents, they learn culture and norms directly from observing your interaction with your parents.
  8. Encourage positive self talk and use affirmations as needed. What we speak to them becomes their inner critics. When we empower children to love themselves for who they are, there is no limit of what they can achieve.
  9. Teach them about treating people with respect regardless of their different background. Talk a lot about multiple heritages, ethnicities, skin colors and cultures, and being different is ok.
  10. Accept for who they are- Understand the mixed children have their own culture. When they’re old enough, they will explore their third culture for themselves, religions to believe and to decide how they want to identify themselves.

Homeschooling preschoolers in Montessori way

Being a working mom who doesn’t send children to school, I wonder how am I going to teach my children necessary skills and kindergarten readiness in a limited amount of time when I am with my children.

We are blessed to have both sets of grandparents to watch my toddler and preschooler while we are at work. That single thought of not wanting my kids to be left behind drives me to become certified in early childhood education. Honestly, I didn’t know how to start to teach my kids as there are a lot of overwhelming information out there. After tremendous research on homeschool philosophy, I am leaning more towards Montessori education at home. As most Montessori inspired activities are play based learning and self correcting, there is less role of teacher and more of child led and child oriented activities. Best part is that creating love of learning in comfort loving home environment.

Just to get you started on this path, or to encourage you, here are a few reasons and tips for homeschooling preschoolers.

  • Stress and expectation – Check your expectation on becoming homeschool expert. We will not be able to duplicate a classroom environment, school schedule, and curriculum in your home. However, since Montessori is child led, preparing the environment in Montessori way, children will be able to have their own work period by self learning and exploring Montessori materials.
  • Good for busy parents– In Montessori, there is no right or wrong way of using the learning materials. We need to do presentation once, then let the children decide how they want to work with the toys or materials as long as they are not destroying.
  • Becoming a role model– Your kids learn how to treat and communicate with others and how to respect themselves by watching and copying your behavior. I used to be a forgetful messy person, and not returning things back to their original place. Now that I want to be a role model, I have to do a lot of self-awareness to return things to model Montessori work cycle. As a result, I become better at returning and organizing things.
  • Stress free environment– Research of children shows that children in academic environment are more anxious and less creative than learning at home groups. Direct instruction group have more stress than child centered home based learning.
  • EQ over IQ – Growing up in Asian culture, we are worried about the children’s academic performance more so than enjoyment of the relationship with our children. Most of the time, we are missing out what is important for our children because we are too focused on achievement. Thinking children as a complete human being and letting them explore, move independently, believing them they are capable of doing anything given an appropriate environment, and discuss with what’s going on their world will make them become a well rounded compassionate adults.
  • Bonding time– As a busy working mom, I can easily incorporate Montessori at home without affecting our bonding time by doing chores together. Cooking, cleaning and doing dish together, are a few example of Montessori practical life skills activities providing the right sized furniture and tools for children. Healthy intellectual kids are raised by having good relationship between kids and parents. Doing household chores or letting them involve in small decision such as what to cook for dinner can provide them sense of own importance. Working together with parents also learn and increase vocabulary in playful way.
  • Parents as a guide/facilitator Your role is as a facilitator to your child’s learning. Very often you’ll find yourself learning something new right alongside your child. Do not think as if you are not qualified to homeschool your children especially if you are not Montessori trained. There are a lot of resources out there to self-taught.
  • Montessori Toys/ materials – You’ll be surprised by how few materials you need to teach. We don’t need iconic Montessori materials to practice Montessori philosophy and education at home. Children does not need to have all educational toys. Play is primary way for children to learn and we can always find household items and DIY to let the child practice on a skill they are into.
  • This is your school– You’re the teacher, principal, all rolled into one. If you want to spend an entire day going for a nature walk, do it! Teaching Math while cooking all day, do it! Being spontaneous and flexible to meet you and your child’s needs is part of fun adventure, and everyday discoveries.

Happy learning at home!
